SURFIN' WITH THE KING-ELVIS BIRTHDAY DANCE PARTY
In early 1957, singer Elvis Presley is riding a wave of popularity with the Leiber & Stoller-penned song "Jailhouse Rock" written for an Elvis movie of the same name. The title song soon reaches #1 on the Billboard charts. January 6, 1957, Elvis Presley sings five songs in his third and final performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Elvis, who was filmed only from the waist up, is endorsed by Mr. Sullivan, "I wanted to say this is a real decent, fine boy." Elvis reports later "I didn't do anything but just jiggle."
Saturday, January 6, 2007, fifty years after his Ed Sullivan Show appearance, "Surfin' with The King," ,”a dance party held in celebration of Elvis' 72nd Birthday, will take place from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM at Chick Hall's Surf Club, DC's "last honky tonk inside the Beltway." Enjoy a swingin' evening of surf guitar-injected tunes by Reverb Galaxy followed by Elvis favorites performed by The Hula Monsters, known for their wide-ranging repertoire of Hawaiian swing, rockabilly, jazz and country music.
